Chia Seed – The Miracle Seed
Chia Seed
Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia! You may remember chia by the bizarre clay pets that sprouted green grass for hair, but fortunately we have come to realize that the chia seed have incredible health benefits.
The chia seed is derived from the desert plant Salvia hispanica of Central and South America. The Aztecs began harvesting chia as early as 3500 B.C., however it wasn’t until the 1990s when scientists and agriculturalists reintroduced this nutritional seed for modern day uses. Despite its mild taste and visual similarity to poppy seeds, chia seeds have enormous health benefits. They are also known as ‘runner’s food’ because they absorb up to 12x their weight in water which allows the body to stay hydrated longer and allows for the carbohydrates to break down slowly into the blood stream (think of the opposite effect of how chips or candy are digested!) In human studies, chia seeds have been shown to lower triglycerides, blood pressure and blood sugars while decreasing inflammation and oxidative damage for those with type 2 diabetes. Still not impressed? Take a look at how these seeds pack a serious nutritional punch in every serving.
Protein: Chia is one of nature’s highest plant-based protein source. In fact, 1 ounce of chia contains all 9 essential amino acids in proper proportions (like meat but without the saturated fat!)
Fiber: 2 tablespoons equates to 11 grams of fiber. Fiber balances blood sugars, reduces our risk of type 2 diabetes and increases satiety.
Omega Fatty acids: chia seeds are loaded with omega-3’s and, by weight, contain more omega 3s than salmon. They contain more fatty acids than any other known plant. Omega 3s may cut the risk of chronic diseases and inflammation while supporting brain and heart health.
Minerals: 15x more magnesium than broccoli, 3x more iron than spinach, 6x more calcium than milk, and 2x more potassium than bananas… out-chia-standing!
Antioxidants: 3x the antioxidant strength of blueberries which protects your immune system and cells from free radical damage.
